Confidence Not Vanity Is Driving the Skincare Boom
Move over vanity—confidence is the new beauty currency. According to new research from Cynosure Lutronic, a global leader in energy-based skin technology, a staggering 61% of people undergoing aesthetic treatments say they’re doing it to feel more confident—not just to look better. The nationwide study, which surveyed individuals aged 25 to 64, reveals a major shift in how we think about skincare: it’s no longer a luxury, but a form of self-care.
The findings show that 90% of people report at least one skin concern, with the most common being fine lines, dark circles and scarring. Younger age groups (25–34) are leading the movement, driven by both preventative care and persistent acne—41% in this group said breakouts were a major issue, more than twice as high as older age brackets.
The impact goes beyond skin deep. One in four respondents said their skin insecurities negatively affected their mental health and social lives, while 40% admitted they dislike being photographed due to skin concerns. The so-called 'Zoom Boom'—fuelled by endless video calls—has only accelerated this hyper-awareness.
Interestingly, men are becoming more engaged in aesthetic treatments too. Their top concerns include acne, rosacea and eczema, but one in five men also admitted to using makeup to feel more confident. It’s a sign that gender norms in skincare and beauty are shifting fast.
Despite rising demand, the study also reveals an educational gap: 20% of those surveyed were unaware of the treatment options available to them. Clinics now have a huge opportunity to bridge that gap—particularly for older demographics—by making treatments feel more accessible, less intimidating, and framed around wellness, not just looks.
From 'pre-juvenation' trends in Gen Z to wrinkle-smoothing treatments in the 55+ crowd, the common thread is clear: people aren’t just chasing glow, they’re chasing confidence. In today’s beauty landscape, feeling better is the ultimate goal.
