What's Underlashing and How Do You Do It?

Gaining popularity thanks to BeautyTok, Underlashing is one of the breakout beauty trends of the past 12 months. Underlashing is a lash technique whereby false lashes are applied under your natural lashes instead of the traditional method of applying them on top. Makeup artists and beauty TikTokers have adopted this application technique, as it changes the overall appearance of the lashes, and gives a natural lift to the eyes.

Underlashing refers to the technique of applying false lashes to the underside of the lower eyelids. This approach is designed to enhance the lower lash line subtly, promoting a more balanced, open-eyed look that can't be achieved with upper eyelash extensions alone. The result is a sophisticated, soft framing of the eyes that enhances natural beauty without overpowering it.

“To create the look, you can use a lash strip or individual lash extension. If using it  is recommended that for lash strips, you cut from the inside of the strip going outwards, and for individual lash extensions, you are to take each lash and start from the outer corner of the eyes applying underneath.

They should be placed under your natural lashes, just above the water line. For extra drama you can apply individual lashes or a small corner of the strip underneath the outer eye corner for a siren-eye payoff." comments Jennifer Johnson, Senior Brand Manager at Ardell Lashes.

Is Underlashing safe?

''Underlashing is absolutely safe especially if allergic to traditional lash extensions. The bonds used should be flexible, meaning the lashes move freely with the natural lash as you wear them making them gentle and user friendly. The bonds should be lab tested and ophthalmologist approved which makes them wearable for even the most sensitive eyes. What's more, as is the case with Lashify, when lashes are designed to be virtually weightless they will not cause any damage to the natural lash. For first time application, look down into a mirror as this will give you the best view of the underside of your lash allowing for easier application” advises Jill Medicis, Director of Education for Lashify

Underlashing is ideal for those seeking a sophisticated look that suggests care and attention to detail without overt boldness. This technique can balance the facial features by drawing attention evenly across the eye area, rather than focusing it all on the upper lashes. By accentuating the lower lashes, underlashing adds depth and dimension to the eyes, making them appear larger and more expressive.
